An unvented cylinder stores hot water at mains pressure, so showers and taps run strongly without a cold-water tank in the loft. Gareth installs, repairs and services unvented cylinders in homes across Caterham and the nearby towns.
Installing a cylinder
An unvented system needs a good incoming mains supply, so Gareth checks the water pressure and flow first. He also looks at where the cylinder will sit, the discharge pipe route to outside, and how it will be heated, usually from a system boiler with an immersion heater as backup.
Common cylinder faults
Water dripping from the tundish, the small open funnel on the discharge pipe, is the most common sign of trouble. It usually comes from a tired expansion vessel or a pressure valve. Other calls are about no hot water, lukewarm water or pressure that varies. These cylinders have safety devices built in, so faults should be looked at rather than left.
Servicing
Manufacturers recommend a yearly service to check the valves and recharge the expansion vessel. It can be done on the same visit as a boiler service.
